Is Temu Actually Cheaper Than Amazon and Walmart?
Temu became famous for prices that looked impossible: $5 earbuds, $3 phone cases, $10 dresses. For a while, a lot of them really were cheaper than Amazon or Walmart. That is much less true than it used to be, and the answer now depends heavily on what you are buying.
Here is what changed, where Temu can still be cheaper, and how to check before you hit buy.
What changed
Temu's original model shipped orders straight from China to US shoppers. That worked because of a customs rule called "de minimis", which let packages worth under $800 enter the US without duties. Cheap individual parcels could arrive with no import tax at all.
In 2025, that changed. The US ended the duty-free treatment for small parcels from China and Hong Kong in May 2025, and later extended the change to small parcels from other countries. At the same time, tariffs on many Chinese goods rose sharply, and have changed repeatedly since.
Temu responded in two ways. For a period, it added large "import charges" to orders shipped from China. Then it shifted toward a local model, selling more products from sellers and warehouses already in the United States, and showing many China-shipped items as unavailable.
The result: many Temu prices went up, and some of the cheapest items disappeared or were replaced with US-stocked versions that cost more.
Where Temu can still be cheaper
Generic, unbranded small items. Phone accessories, craft supplies, kitchen gadgets, organizers, party supplies, cheap jewelry and decor are where Temu has always been strongest. These are often the same generic products sold on Amazon under different brand names, so Temu can still sometimes win.
First-order and promotional pricing. Temu leans heavily on coupons, credits and new-user discounts. These can make an order cheap, but they are designed to get you buying, and the prices after the promotion may be less impressive.
Where Amazon or Walmart usually win
Anything branded. Name-brand products are usually cheaper, or at least more trustworthy, at Amazon, Walmart, Target and Costco.
Anything you need soon. Amazon and Walmart are usually much faster, and easier to return.
Electronics and anything safety-related. Chargers, batteries, hair tools, car seats and kids' products are not where you want the cheapest unknown seller. Certifications and returns matter more than a few dollars.
Clothing that needs to fit. Cheap clothing that fits badly or falls apart after a wash is not a saving. Sizing on ultra-cheap sites can be inconsistent.
How to check whether Temu is actually cheaper
- Search the exact item elsewhere. Use the product photo or a description. Many Temu items appear on Amazon, Walmart and AliExpress as generic products with different brand names.
- Compare the total, not the sticker. Include shipping, any import or service charges, taxes and minimum order rules. The price that matters is the one at checkout.
- Ignore crossed-out prices and "90% off" badges. They are reference prices, not proof. Compare against what the item actually sells for elsewhere. The method is in how to tell if a deal is actually a deal.
- Factor in quality and returns. If you are likely to throw it away or have to rebuy, it was not cheaper.
- Do not let the game decide for you. Spin-the-wheel credits and timers are designed to make you add more to your cart. Decide what you want before you open the app.
Scanning or searching an item in Priced shows what the same product sells for at other stores, which is the quickest way to see whether the Temu price is really the lowest.
Common questions
Is Temu cheaper than Amazon?
Sometimes, for generic small items like accessories, craft supplies and organizers, especially with promotions. For branded products, electronics and anything you need quickly, Amazon or Walmart is often the same price or cheaper once shipping, fees, quality and returns are included.
Why did Temu prices go up?
The US ended duty-free entry for small parcels, first from China and Hong Kong in 2025 and later more broadly, and tariffs on many Chinese goods rose. Temu responded with import charges and then a shift to US-based sellers and warehouses, which generally means higher prices than its original direct-from-China model.
Is Temu safe to buy from?
Temu is a real marketplace, and orders generally arrive. Quality varies a lot by seller, and some product categories, especially electronics, cosmetics and kids' products, carry more risk. Stick to well-reviewed items, read low-star reviews, and avoid safety-critical products from unknown sellers.
What is the cheapest place to buy everyday items?
It depends on the item. Warehouse clubs can win on bulk staples, as covered in are warehouse clubs actually cheaper, Walmart and Target often win on branded essentials, and Temu or Amazon can win on generic small items. Comparing the same item across stores is the only reliable way to know.
