What to Buy (and Skip) on Black Friday 2026
Black Friday 2026 is Friday, November 27, the day after Thanksgiving. The categories that most reliably see real discounts are TVs from major brands, laptops, headphones and earbuds, game console bundles, small kitchen appliances and retailers' own devices like Amazon Echo and Kindle. Things to be skeptical of: "Black Friday edition" TVs built for the sale, clothing from brands that are always on sale, and anything where the only proof of a deal is a crossed-out price. The safest check is whether the price is low compared with the same item's own recent history.
When Black Friday 2026 actually starts
Black Friday hasn't been a single day for years. Retailers now run deals for most of November, often starting with early "Black Friday" promotions in the first or second week of the month and running through Cyber Monday, which is November 30, 2026. October sales like Amazon's Prime Big Deal Days (October 6 to 7 this year) also preview many holiday prices.
What that means for you: the best price on a given item might show up on Black Friday, a week earlier, or on Cyber Monday. Treat the whole stretch from early November through Cyber Monday as one window, and buy when the price on your item is at the low end of its range. Our comparison of Cyber Monday vs Black Friday covers which categories tend to bottom out on which day.
Usually worth buying
TVs from major brands
TVs are the classic Black Friday category, and name-brand models frequently hit their lowest prices of the year around Thanksgiving. The deals tend to be best on the previous year's models, which retailers want to clear before new lines arrive in the spring. Mid-range and premium sets from well-known brands often see meaningful cuts.
The catch is in the next section: not every TV in the Black Friday ad is one you'd find any other time of year.
Laptops
Laptops see strong discounts, especially mainstream Windows laptops and Chromebooks. Apple's MacBooks also tend to get modest discounts at third-party retailers like Amazon and Best Buy around this time. Before you buy, compare the full spec sheet, not just the model name. The same laptop line can ship with different processors, memory and storage, and a deep discount on a low-memory configuration isn't the same as a deal on the version you want.
Headphones and AirPods
Wireless earbuds and headphones are among the most heavily discounted electronics during the holidays. AirPods, in particular, are commonly discounted at Amazon, Walmart, Target and Best Buy around Black Friday, even though Apple itself rarely marks them down. Check that you're getting the current generation, since older models sometimes get the biggest headline cuts.
Game console bundles
Consoles themselves rarely get large straight price cuts, but holiday bundles that include a game, extra controller or store gift card can add real value. The question is whether you'd have bought the bundled extras anyway. A bundle with a game you'd never play is just the console at full price.
Small kitchen appliances
Air fryers, stand mixers, blenders, coffee makers and multicookers are reliable Black Friday categories. Popular brands often hit some of their best prices of the year. This is also a category with lots of lookalike models, so match the exact model number.
Amazon devices and other retailer-owned products
Echo speakers, Fire TV streaming sticks, Kindles and Ring cameras are often discounted heavily during Amazon's big sale events, and Black Friday is one of them. If they hit a similar price during Prime Big Deal Days in October, expect something close to it again in November.
Usually worth skipping
"Black Friday model" TVs
Some TVs in doorbuster ads are derivative models: sets made or configured for big sales events, often with a model number that's slightly different from the brand's regular lineup. They can have cheaper panels, fewer HDMI 2.1 ports, lower brightness or weaker processing compared with similarly named models. They aren't always bad TVs, but the low price reflects lower specs, not a big discount.
How to spot one: search the exact model number. If you can't find professional reviews, the model doesn't appear on the brand's main product pages, or it's only sold at one retailer around November, be careful.
Clothing from brands that are always on sale
Many apparel retailers run promotions so often that "40% off everything" is effectively their normal price. Black Friday discounts at those stores are usually in line with what you'd get most weekends.
Off-brand electronics with inflated list prices
Unknown-brand tablets, smart watches, speakers and projectors often show dramatic percentage discounts against list prices that nobody actually paid. If the brand has no price history to compare against, the "70% off" is meaningless.
Toys before you compare
Toys can get excellent Black Friday prices, but popular toys also bounce around a lot in November and December. Check a few stores before assuming the first doorbuster is the best.
How to check any Black Friday deal
The most common trick on Black Friday is the inflated reference price: a "was" price that was set high for a short time, or never really charged, so the discount looks bigger. Our guide to Black Friday fake discounts explains how retailers do it and how to see through it.
To check a deal quickly:
- Confirm the exact model. Match the full model number, color and configuration across stores.
- Look at the price history, not the tag. A real deal sits at or near the bottom of the item's recent range. If it matches a price you could have gotten in September, it's a fair price, not a Black Friday special.
- Compare across stores. The same product often varies by retailer, and prices change during the day.
- Check the unit price on consumables. Holiday multipacks of batteries, coffee pods, razors and similar items are often priced so the bundle looks cheaper than it is per unit.
- Read the return policy. Many retailers extend return windows for holiday purchases, but terms vary and some categories are excluded. Check the store's current policy before you buy.
Priced handles the first three steps from your phone: scan a barcode or search a product to see the street price across sellers, the unit price, and where today's price sits compared with its recent range. In a store aisle on Black Friday, that's the difference between buying a real deal and buying a sign.
What about price matching and price drops?
Price matching is less useful than it used to be. Amazon doesn't price match other stores, Walmart matches only Walmart.com prices in its stores, and Target ended price matching against competitors like Amazon and Walmart in July 2025, according to news reports at the time. Best Buy still matches a list of major competitors, but it has typically excluded Black Friday through Cyber Monday pricing and membership-only prices. Check each store's current policy before counting on a match.
If you buy early in November and the price drops on Black Friday, ask whether the store offers a price adjustment on its own price. Some retailers do within a set window; many don't. When in doubt, buy closer to the event or buy from a store with a clear adjustment policy.
Common questions
When is Black Friday 2026?
Black Friday 2026 is Friday, November 27, the day after Thanksgiving. Cyber Monday follows on November 30. Many retailers start early Black Friday promotions in early November and run deals through Cyber Monday.
Are Black Friday deals better than Prime Day deals?
Sometimes. Many October Prime Big Deal Days prices reappear around Black Friday, and some categories, like TVs and toys, can go lower in late November. Compare the current price with what the same item cost in October before deciding.
What's the best thing to buy on Black Friday?
Name-brand TVs, laptops, wireless headphones, small kitchen appliances and retailer-owned devices like Echo speakers and Kindles are consistently among the strongest categories. The best buy for you is something you already planned to get, at a price near the bottom of its recent range.
How can I tell if a Black Friday TV is a cheaper derivative model?
Search the full model number. If it's sold by only one retailer, has few or no professional reviews, or doesn't appear in the brand's main lineup, it may be a derivative model with lower specs. Compare panel type, refresh rate, ports and HDR support against the brand's regular models.
