When to Do Christmas Shopping to Avoid Overpaying in 2026
For most gifts, the cheapest window is the stretch from early November through Cyber Monday, which ends November 30, 2026. Electronics, toys and small appliances commonly hit their lowest holiday prices then. Prices often stay close to those lows into early December, and Green Monday (December 14, 2026) brings another round of online deals. After that, shipping deadlines matter more than discounts, and waiting until the last week usually means paying more or settling for what's left.
The 2026 Christmas shopping calendar
Christmas falls on a Friday this year. Here's how the season typically plays out:
- Early October: Amazon's Prime Big Deal Days (October 6 to 7), Target Circle Deal Days (October 6 to 7) and Walmart's deals event (October 5 to 11) kick off holiday pricing. Some of these deals reappear later; some don't.
- Early to mid-November: "Early Black Friday" promotions roll out at most big retailers.
- Black Friday through Cyber Monday (November 27 to 30): Peak discounting across most categories.
- Early December: Many Cyber Week prices linger. Retailers run rolling "12 days of deals" type promotions.
- Green Monday (December 14): The second Monday in December, a term coined by eBay's Shopping.com in 2007 for one of the busiest online shopping days of the month. Expect a wave of online promotions as standard shipping deadlines approach.
- Mid to late December: Shipping cutoffs, then in-store and pickup deals for last-minute shoppers.
- December 26 onward: Post-Christmas clearance on holiday decor, wrapping and seasonal items.
When to buy by type of gift
Electronics and gadgets. Buy during the Black Friday to Cyber Monday window, or earlier if the price is already at the bottom of its range. TVs, headphones, tablets and smart home devices are among the most reliably discounted gifts of the year. Our guide on Cyber Monday vs Black Friday covers which day tends to win for which category.
Toys. Popular toys can get excellent prices around Black Friday, but they also sell out. If a specific toy is on a child's list, buy it when you find it at a fair price rather than gambling on a December drop.
Clothing and accessories. Clothing goes on sale constantly, and winter apparel tends to get cheaper after the holidays. For gifts, Cyber Monday sitewide promo codes are often as good as it gets before Christmas.
Beauty and gift sets. Holiday gift sets launch in the fall and are discounted in waves. Compare the set's price with the full-size items inside it. Some are a real bargain; some are mostly packaging.
Experiences, subscriptions and gift cards. No rush. These don't ship, so you can buy them on Christmas Eve without paying extra.
Price adjustments: what to do if the price drops
Buying early protects you from sellouts, but it exposes you to price drops. Price adjustment policies vary a lot, and several have changed in the last couple of years:
- Amazon doesn't price match other stores and generally doesn't refund the difference when its own price drops.
- Walmart says it doesn't adjust Walmart.com orders if the price later drops, and it doesn't match competitors. In its U.S. stores, it will match the Walmart.com price on identical items.
- Target stopped matching competitors like Amazon and Walmart in July 2025, according to news reports, but it still matches its own prices. Check Target's current policy for the adjustment window.
- Best Buy still matches a list of major competitors and has offered extended holiday price match windows in past seasons, though it has typically excluded Black Friday through Cyber Monday pricing. Check the current terms.
If a store won't adjust and its return window is still open, returning and rebuying can work, as long as the item is unopened and the savings are worth the trip.
Holiday return windows
Many large retailers extend their return windows for gifts bought in the fall. In recent seasons, both Amazon and Walmart let most items bought in the last months of the year be returned through January 31 of the following year, with exceptions. Amazon, for example, set an earlier deadline for Apple products last season.
Retailers announce their extended holiday return policies each fall, and the 2026 terms may differ. Before buying an expensive gift, check the store's current holiday return policy, keep the receipt or order confirmation, and ask for a gift receipt. Watch for exclusions: electronics, opened software, final-sale items and marketplace sellers often have shorter or different rules.
Shipping deadlines
Shipping cutoffs are where last-minute shoppers lose money. Once standard shipping deadlines pass, you're paying for expedited delivery or settling for what's in stock nearby.
USPS, UPS and FedEx publish their recommended holiday shipping deadlines each fall, and retailers set their own cutoffs for guaranteed Christmas delivery, usually in mid to late December. Check the specific carrier and retailer dates for 2026 when they're released rather than assuming last year's dates still apply. A safe habit: aim to have shipped gifts ordered by around Green Monday, and use in-store pickup for anything you're buying after that.
Is it cheaper to buy after Christmas?
For gifts you're giving on December 25, no. But after Christmas is a good time for a few things:
- Holiday decor, wrapping paper, lights and ornaments. Post-Christmas clearance commonly starts on December 26 and deepens through early January.
- Gifts for January birthdays or next year. Some retailers discount leftover holiday stock, especially toys and gift sets.
- Spending gift cards. If you receive gift cards, waiting for post-holiday sales stretches them further. Federal rules generally require that gift cards not expire for at least five years from when they were issued or last loaded, so there's no need to rush.
Gift cards as gifts
Gift cards are a fine gift when you don't know what someone wants, and they let the recipient shop the post-Christmas sales. A few tips:
- Watch for "bonus card" promotions around Black Friday, where a retailer adds a promotional card when you buy a gift card. Read the fine print: bonus cards often have short expiration windows and restrictions.
- Buy cards directly from the retailer or a trusted store, and check that the packaging hasn't been tampered with.
- Never pay a debt, bill or "official" fee with a gift card. That's a classic scam.
The real trick: check the price, not the date
Calendars tell you when deals usually happen. They don't tell you whether the price in front of you is good. A product can be "on sale" in mid-December at a price higher than it was in November.
That's why it helps to look at an item's own price range before buying. Our price history tracking guide explains how to read one. Priced shows that from a barcode scan or a quick search: the street price across sellers, the unit price, and where today's price sits compared with recent weeks. Use it to decide whether to buy now or wait for the next wave of deals.
