Thanksgiving 2026 is Thursday, 26 November, and most big US chains are closed for the day: Walmart, Target, Costco, Best Buy, Home Depot, Lowe's and Aldi all shut their stores. What's usually open is the place you need when you've forgotten the cranberry sauce: many Whole Foods stores with shorter hours, most Dollar General stores, and 24-hour pharmacies. Every big retailer's website stays open, and several start online Black Friday deals on Thanksgiving Day itself. Here's the full list.

Most supermarket chains haven't confirmed their 2026 hours yet. In past years Kroger, Safeway, Albertsons, Publix, H-E-B and Wegmans stores have generally opened with shortened hours and closed early in the afternoon; Trader Joe's and Sam's Club have generally closed. Check your local store's page in the week before, and don't count on anything being open after about 3 p.m.
Everything else
- Post office: closed, no regular mail delivery.
- Banks: closed. ATMs and banking apps work as normal.
- Stock market: closed Thursday; open Friday with an early 1 p.m. ET close.
When Black Friday opens
Stores that close on Thanksgiving typically open early on Friday, 27 November, often 5 or 6 a.m. Exact Black Friday hours are usually announced in mid-November.
